Uncomplicated Snickerdoodle A Timeless Treat

The Ultimate Guide to Baking Classic Snickerdoodles: Simple, Comforting, and Delicious

In a world often bustling with complexity and constant demands, the timeless wisdom of Henry David Thoreau—”Simplify, simplify, simplify”—resonates deeply. For the past year, these words have become more than just a famous quote; they’ve been my personal mantra, guiding my approach to life and, notably, to cooking. As someone who spends considerable time immersed in the culinary world through blogging, I’ve observed a pervasive trend of recipes that are anything but simple. Many are laden with intricate steps, demanding exotic ingredients, and consuming hours of precious time, transforming what should be a joyful act into a tedious chore.

This raises a fundamental question: “Why the unnecessary complexity?”

As an Italian by heritage, I’ve been raised with a profound appreciation for a cuisine renowned for its singular, time-tested element: pure simplicity. The magic of Italian cooking lies in its celebration of outstanding, fresh ingredients that are allowed to shine, unmasked by heavy sauces or elaborate preparations. This philosophy is why I find myself so drawn to chefs like David Rocco, whose style effortlessly embodies this principle. He doesn’t “mess it up with ‘stuff’,” but rather allows the inherent purity and flavor of each dish to stand on its own, delivering an authentic and satisfying experience. This approach isn’t just about taste; it’s about a connection to food that is honest, comforting, and deeply satisfying.

Recently, with the unpredictable and often unsettling weather patterns sweeping across the Southeast, our household found itself yearning for precisely this kind of comfort. We craved something warm, simple, and baked – a dish that would infuse our kitchen and home with a sense of safety and tranquility, if only through the comforting embrace of familiar aromas. And what could evoke that cherished feeling more perfectly than warm cookies and milk? It was a simple, yet profound, return to childhood innocence and joy, a perfect antidote to the chaos outside.

Among all the myriad cookie varieties in the world, our undeniable, hands-down favorite is the classic Snickerdoodle. Growing up, these delightful treats were a rarity in our home. My mother, bless her heart, was not a baker, reserving her oven for holiday festivities like Christmas. My husband, on the other hand, hails from a family where baking was not just a hobby but a cherished tradition, an integral part of their family life. Fortunately for us, he has lovingly carried on this wonderful tradition throughout our many years together. In fact, it is *he* who bakes all the cookies in our house, not me! And I must confess, he’s an absolutely superb baker, a true maestro of cookies.

So, it is with great pleasure that I share Mr. M. and P.’s (our affectionate nickname for his “meat and potatoes” approach to baking) beloved Snickerdoodle recipe. This particular recipe has been thoughtfully adapted and perfected over the years, lovingly borrowed from an old, treasured cookie cookbook I acquired many years ago, precisely to embark on the journey of baking these wonderful treats. The source of this culinary gem is none other than the classic *Cookies by Bess*, published in 1981—a testament to its enduring appeal and timeless simplicity.

These Snickerdoodles embody the very essence of simplicity while delivering an unparalleled classic taste. They are, indeed, a timeless treat that brings smiles and warmth to any home. They are simple to make, yet profoundly delicious, striking that perfect balance that makes a recipe a keeper. The soft, chewy texture, coupled with the signature tangy cream of tartar and the sweet, aromatic cinnamon-sugar coating, creates an irresistible symphony of flavors and sensations that instantly transports you to a place of comfort and happiness.

So, go ahead, pass the milk, please! You’ll want a tall, cold glass ready to accompany these warm, delightful cookies. They’re not just a dessert; they’re an experience, a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, perfectly encapsulating the theme of simple pleasures and honest-to-goodness flavor that this article celebrates.

Units

Scale

  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 11/2 cups sugar
  • 2 jumbo eggs
  • 23/4 cup flour
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Cream butter, sugar and eggs together.
  2. Stir in dried ingredients.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Chill dough.
  5. Roll into small balls.
  6. Combine the 2 Tbsp. of cinnamon and 2 Tbsp. of sugar
  7. Roll the cookie dough balls in this cinnamon-sugar mixture to cover.
  8. Place balls 2″ apart on a greased cookie sheet.
  9. Bake in 400 degree oven until lightly browned and STILL SOFT for about 6 – 8 minutes. The longer they bake, the harder they will get after removing from the oven. We like ours more soft.
