Oberammergau: A Fairytale Village of Painted Houses, Passion, and Bavarian Charm in the Alps
The fairytale of “Little Red Riding Hood” painted fresco on a home in Oberammergau, Bavaria.
After experiencing the majestic grandeur of Neuschwanstein Castle and the serene, opulent beauty of Wieskirche Church of The Scourged Savior (The Church of The Meadow) during the first two days of our Bavarian adventure, one might think the visual delights had reached their peak. Yet, Bavaria continually surprises and enchants. Our journey through this captivating region revealed that beauty isn’t merely about scale or splendor; it manifests in countless unique forms, each leaving an indelible impression.
On our third day, my husband and I embarked on a leisurely exploration of Oberammergau, a truly distinctive and utterly charming Alpine village nestled amidst the breathtaking Bavarian Alps in Germany. This quaint hamlet is globally renowned not only for its picturesque setting and artistic heritage but also as the venerable home of the Passion Play of Christ, a monumental dramatic performance staged once every ten years, drawing visitors from across the globe.
Stepping into Oberammergau is like entering a living storybook. The village instantly captivates, taking your breath away with its extraordinary visual tapestry. With every corner turned, every street strolled, new architectural wonders reveal themselves. Buildings and homes are adorned with an incredible array of painted murals, transforming the entire village into an open-air art gallery. This unique art form, known as “Lüftlmalerei,” is a fresco-style technique typically painted on the exterior walls of houses, creating vibrant scenes that tell stories, celebrate history, and express deep-seated faith.
These magnificent frescoes depict a wide spectrum of subjects. Some transport you directly into the whimsical world of beloved fairytales, such as “Hansel and Gretel” or “Little Red Riding Hood,” delighting visitors young and old. Others offer intriguing glimpses into medieval life, illustrating historical events or reflecting a family’s legacy and trade. However, a significant number of these murals are dedicated to themes related to the Christian faith, echoing the profound spiritual devotion of the community. The people of Oberammergau are deeply faithful, primarily adherents of the Catholic Church, and scenes of devotion, biblical narratives, and saints are prominently painted and sculpted throughout the village. Even for those not of the Catholic faith, the village serves as a powerful inspiration, showcasing the enduring importance of faith and community spirit to its residents.
The first building we encountered, depicted above, is a private residence, a testament to the village’s commitment to this art form. The entire front facade and both sides of the house are wrapped in meticulously painted illustrations depicting the classic fairytale of “Little Red Riding Hood.” The vibrant colors and intricate details bring the familiar story to life, making the house a true piece of public art that blends seamlessly into the daily lives of its inhabitants.
Prepare to be enchanted! Here are some closer views, allowing you to appreciate the exquisite detail and storytelling captured in these murals:

A brief note on the lighting: when these photographs were taken, I was standing in the shade, while the morning sun was rising from behind the house. Therefore, some photos may have a slight ‘bluish’ shadow tint, a natural effect when capturing scenes nestled among the towering Bavarian Alps.
Just a stone’s throw from the “Little Red Riding Hood” house, across the sun-drenched street, stands another iconic building: a children’s home affectionately known as the “Hansel and Gretel” house. This magnificent structure is entirely painted with enchanting scenes from the beloved Grimm’s fairytale, making it a truly magical sight. You can appreciate a portion of this expansive children’s home in the photograph below:

The day blessed us with a perfectly clear, blue sky, devoid of any clouds or the typical winter fog, which provided ideal conditions for admiring these outdoor masterpieces. As we continued our leisurely walk along the main street, we were utterly awestruck by the sheer volume and exquisite workmanship of these painted buildings. It’s truly humbling to imagine the artists behind these enduring works, transforming everyday architecture into profound visual narratives.

Moving towards the bustling (or, in our case, remarkably tranquil) center of Oberammergau, the painted murals continued to unfold, seemingly without end. Our visit occurred approximately three weeks after the tragic attack on Paris, which, sadly, led to many tourists canceling their travel plans across Europe. Consequently, the village was unusually quiet. Typically, Oberammergau would be teeming with visitors, especially during the festive Christmastime season. While the lack of crowds was regrettable for the local economy, it did afford us the unique opportunity to explore the town at our own pace, capturing photographs without any jostling or obstruction, allowing for an intimate appreciation of every detail.

Beyond fairytales and religious iconography, many murals celebrate the daily rhythm and heritage of the village. The mural below, for instance, beautifully reflects scenes of everyday life in Oberammergau, offering a window into its past and present:

Let’s take an even closer look at the intricate details of this particular mural, appreciating the craftsmanship that brings these historical vignettes to life:

Among the many masterpieces, one particular mural stood out as my personal favorite. Painted above a traditional woodcarving shop, it depicted the crucifixion in stunning detail, with an intense and captivating blue hue that was truly breathtaking. The depth of emotion and the skill evident in its execution made it profoundly moving.
This was my favorite mural of all; my husband captured this photo while I was also taking a shot with my phone camera.
Another fascinating aspect of Oberammergau’s artistic landscape is the prevalence of “trompe l’oeil” paintings. This celebrated French term, meaning “to deceive the eye,” refers to an artistic technique that creates an optical illusion, making painted objects appear as if they are three-dimensional. These masterful works of visual trickery transform flat surfaces into seemingly elaborate architectural features, adding depth, grandeur, and an element of playful deception to the village’s buildings.

These murals, especially those depicting religious scenes, served a crucial historical purpose. In times when literacy was not universal, these visual narratives acted as powerful educational tools, teaching the stories and tenets of the Christian faith to villagers. They transformed buildings into open books, accessible to all, reinforcing community values and shared spiritual heritage.
These visual images once served to teach the Christian faith to villagers who were not yet literate.
Beyond the vibrant murals, Oberammergau exudes a quintessential Bavarian charm that invites closer inspection. Even the quiet moments of the village offer a glimpse into its character. An outdoor biergarten, typically buzzing with activity, lay peacefully “asleep” in the morning light, hinting at lively evenings. Similarly, a typical German tavern presented a tranquil scene, awaiting the day’s patrons, its rustic ambiance a silent testament to Bavarian hospitality.

Oberammergau’s appeal extends beyond its famous paintings, reaching into the very fabric of its architecture and streetscapes. The village offers a wealth of visual and textural beauty that, while sometimes overlooked, completes its charming identity. From the ancient stones beneath your feet to the intricately carved details on its buildings, every element tells a story.

Oberammergau truly is a gem in the heart of Bavaria, a place where history, art, and faith intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. Its painted houses, the legacy of the Passion Play, and the tranquil Alpine surroundings offer a unique blend of cultural richness and natural beauty. This exploration has merely scratched the surface of the village’s allure. There’s so much more to uncover, more artistic wonders, more stories etched into the very fabric of its buildings, and further traditions that define this extraordinary community.
