From Blizzards to Beaches: My Journey from Midwestern Winters to Tropical Sunshine
The latest beautiful, albeit surprising, snowfall in South Carolina, a rare sight south of the Mason-Dixon line!
There’s an undeniable magic to fresh snow. That crisp, brilliant white blanket, stark against a vibrant blue sky, truly is gorgeous. It transforms familiar landscapes into breathtaking winterscapes, often inspiring a sense of wonder and peacefulness. Yet, for many, the beauty of snow eventually gives way to the practical realities and the longing for warmth.
Childhood Winters in Iowa: A Snowy Paradise
Growing up amidst the relentless wind and frequent blizzards of Iowa, snow wasn’t merely an event; it was a normal, cherished part of life. As children, we eagerly anticipated the first snowfall, knowing it heralded endless opportunities for adventure. The biting cold and swirling flakes were simply the backdrop to our most thrilling escapades. We knew nothing different, and we loved every minute of it.
Our days were filled with imaginative play, transforming our snowy surroundings into a grand playground. We constructed elaborate snow forts, complete with ‘shelves’ for our supplies and strategic ‘windows’ to scout for incoming snowball assaults. Snowmen, snow ladies, and snow children of all sizes and whimsical shapes populated our yards. Epic snowball fights were a daily ritual, punctuated by laughter and the thrill of pursuit. Every morning, we’d trudge our way to the bus stop, bundled in layers, thinking nothing of the journey. Our parents never had to drive us; the buses in Iowa never stopped running, regardless of the weather. Snow wasn’t just scenery; it was woven into the fabric of our daily existence.
Beyond our backyards, winter offered even more exhilarating activities. We couldn’t wait for the first sled or toboggan ride down the exhilarating slopes of Cemetery Hill, the steepest and widest hill in our town. The sheer speed and rush of cold air against our faces were unforgettable. We also anxiously awaited the freezing of the city park ponds, transforming them into natural ice skating rinks. Bundled in ear muffs and scarves, we’d spend hours twirling, gliding, and inevitably falling, during the festive Christmastime season. It was our humble, yet incredibly gratifying and memorable, version of New York City’s Rockefeller Center ice arena. Later, as college students, we embraced snowmobiling across vast, frozen lake tops and even enjoyed “blizzard booze parties,” warming our souls with hot Peppermint Schnapps during Big Ten football games – adventures I readily confess to!

A Shift in Perspective: The Lure of the South
My comfortable relationship with snow took an unexpected turn during graduate school. A man from the frigid terrains of Ohio entered my life, and after some time, declared, “If this relationship is going to go any further, we need to get something straight.” Intrigued, I asked, “What’s that?” His reply was definitive: “We’re moving SOUTH!” My immediate, enthusiastic response was, “No problem! NO PROBLEM at all!” The thought of warmer climates was incredibly appealing, promising a lifestyle free from constant shoveling and bone-chilling cold.
For some adults, snow simply isn’t the same magical experience it was in childhood. While we still enjoy the cozy ambiance of ski lodges, sipping hot beverages by a roaring fireplace, our active participation in winter sports has dwindled. I no longer ski, and while I still love the idea of ice skating, one unfortunate fall that resulted in an injured elbow taught me a valuable lesson: I no longer enjoy broken bones. These days, I gracefully accept the realities of age and prefer to watch talented skaters during the Olympics from the comfort of my warm home. Similarly, the idea of sitting on a frozen Midwestern lake for ice fishing holds little appeal. My preference has shifted dramatically towards deep-sea fishing in much warmer, indeed, *very* much warmer waters!
The prospect of moving South sounded utterly delightful. It represented an escape, a promise of milder winters, and a chance to embrace a completely different way of life. We envisioned a future where layers of thermal clothing were a distant memory, replaced by light fabrics and abundant sunshine. This decision marked a turning point, signaling our collective desire to trade the challenges of cold weather for the comforts of perpetual warmth.

Chasing the Sun: From Carolina Snow to Caribbean Shores
Despite our shared desire to escape the snow, destiny had a humorous twist in store. Here we are, years later, residing in the Carolinas, experiencing winter after winter of truly unprecedented snowfalls. While each Carolina snowfall possesses its own unique, fleeting beauty, these white blankets serve as a stark reminder of what we sought to leave behind. Even amidst the picturesque landscapes created by these unexpected blizzards, our yearning for genuinely warm climates persists, stronger than ever.
The sentiment is widely shared. Photos like those generously shared by Annamaria of Bakewell Junction in New York vividly depict the immense challenges and sheer volume of snow that others continue to contend with, reinforcing our commitment to seeking perpetual warmth.

Even more snow covering the roof of Annamaria’s gazebo . . . truly amazing!
With that persistent desire for sun-soaked days and ocean breezes, I bid each of you a kind and warm “CIAO” from the glorious Caribbean, where we are currently reveling in Spring Break. The contrast between the occasional Carolina snow and the vibrant, tropical paradise we’ve discovered here couldn’t be more striking. This is the warmth we’ve always craved, a true escape from winter’s enduring grasp.
Embracing Tropical Bliss in the Virgin Islands
The unbelievable turquoise-green color of the water in the Virgin Islands, a mesmerizing sight.
The moment you arrive in the Virgin Islands, the crisp, cool air of winter fades into a distant memory, replaced by the gentle embrace of a warm, humid breeze. The landscape is an explosion of color and life, a vivid contrast to any snow-covered scene. Here, the water itself is a spectacle – an almost unbelievable turquoise-green that shifts and shimmers under the tropical sun. It’s an invitation to dive in, to explore the vibrant underwater world, or simply to gaze at its serene beauty from a pristine white sand beach. The air hums with the sounds of island life, from the gentle lapping of waves to the distant calls of tropical birds, creating a truly immersive experience.
Local fishermen diligently bringing in their fresh catch at dusk.
Life here moves to a different rhythm, one dictated by the sun and the sea. Each morning, in the tranquil, blue hues of dawn, fishermen in quaint little “Frenchtown” set out to sea, returning later with their bountiful catch. Watching them unload their vibrant array of fish, fresh from the Caribbean depths, is a captivating glimpse into the local culture and economy. As evening descends, the same fishermen return, their boats silhouetted against a spectacular sunset, a daily ritual that speaks to the timeless connection between the islanders and the ocean. It’s a stark contrast to ice fishing, offering the excitement of the open sea and the satisfaction of fresh seafood in a warm, idyllic setting.

Wildlife also thrives under the tropical sun. It’s not uncommon to spot a native iguana, basking lazily in the warm sunshine, its scales glinting in the light. These fascinating creatures are a common sight, adding to the exotic charm of the islands. Beyond the immediate coastline, the islands offer breathtaking panoramic vistas. From the summit of a mountain on St. Thomas, the view is nothing short of stunning. The vast expanse of the azure sea dotted with emerald islands, stretching out to the horizon, is a powerful reminder of nature’s majesty and the sheer beauty of a world untouched by winter’s chill. Every corner offers a new perspective, a new shade of blue or green, and a profound sense of peace.

From the snow-swept plains of my Iowa childhood to the unexpected flurries in the Carolinas, my journey has ultimately led to the tranquil, sun-drenched shores of the Caribbean. It’s a transition from bundling up to basking in the sun, from shoveling snow to swimming in turquoise waters. This escape embodies a profound shift in lifestyle and perspective, celebrating the enduring allure of warmth and the endless joys of a tropical paradise. The memories of snowy winters remain cherished, but the comfort and beauty of these sun-kissed islands now define our ideal escape.
