Crafting the Perfect Strawberry Poppy Seed Balsamic Vinaigrette

One of the true secrets to an exceptional salad lies in its dressing. Whenever possible, I highly encourage making your own homemade dressings. Not only are they infinitely fresher and bursting with more authentic flavors, but they also allow you to control the ingredients, avoiding the unnecessary preservatives and artificial additives often found in store-bought varieties. This sweet yet tangy Strawberry Poppy Seed Balsamic Vinaigrette is a prime example of culinary simplicity meeting sensational taste. It comes together in less than 10 minutes, making it a perfect solution even when time is of the essence. This vinaigrette, paired with the vibrant salad, is your quick ticket to a delicious and healthy meal that tastes gourmet.

Can Strawberry Spinach Salad Be Made Ahead?

Absolutely, yes! The beauty of this Strawberry Spinach Salad extends to its convenience as a make-ahead dish, perfect for simplifying meal prep or reducing stress when entertaining. The key to preserving its freshness and vibrant textures is smart storage. To prepare in advance, keep the salad’s various components separated until just before serving. The vinaigrette should be stored in its own airtight jar in the refrigerator. The dry ingredients, such as the nuts, are best kept apart from the moist elements like strawberries and spinach; placing them in a separate small container within a larger covered bowl housing the other salad components prevents them from absorbing excess moisture and becoming soft. By assembling everything at the last minute, you ensure the spinach remains crisp, the strawberries retain their firm juiciness, and the nuts maintain their delightful crunch, guaranteeing a fresh and vibrant salad every time.

Customizing Your Strawberry Spinach Salad: Endless Possibilities

The beauty of this strawberry spinach salad recipe lies in its incredible adaptability. It’s designed to be a canvas for your personal taste preferences and seasonal availability! Don’t hesitate to experiment with different fruits, cheeses, or nuts to create a rendition that’s uniquely yours. Here are some fantastic ideas for delicious substitutions and additions that can transform this salad for any season or palate:

  • **Berry Bonanza:** While strawberries are stellar, feel free to swap them out or combine them with other fresh berries like juicy blueberries, tart blackberries, or delicate raspberries. Any fresh berry will lend its unique sweetness and color to the mix.
  • **Autumnal Flavors:** As the leaves change, so can your salad! In the fall, consider replacing strawberries with crisp, thinly sliced **apples or pears**, which offer a wonderful crunch and subtle sweetness. Dried cranberries also add a delightful chewiness and tart contrast.
  • **Winter Warmers:** During the colder months, brighten your salad with tropical or citrus notes. Sweet **pineapple chunks or vibrant clementine oranges** are excellent choices that provide a refreshing burst of flavor.
  • **Nutty Alternatives:** No walnuts on hand? No problem! **Pecans, almonds, or cashews** are all excellent substitutes, each offering a distinct flavor profile and satisfying crunch. For an extra layer of indulgence, try candied pecans (either homemade or found in the produce section of your local grocery store) – they truly are sensational!
  • **Cheesy Swaps:** If goat cheese isn’t your preference, or you’re simply looking for a different creamy element, consider **feta cheese, gorgonzola, or blue cheese crumbles**. These alternatives provide a lovely salty or pungent complement to the sweet fruit.
  • **Onion Omission:** Not a fan of the sharp bite of red onions? Simply leave them out, or try thinly sliced green onions for a milder flavor.

More Delicious Options to Toss In for an Even Richer Salad:

  • **Greens Variety:** If spinach isn’t your top choice, explore other leafy greens! Crunchy romaine lettuce or a flavorful mixed greens blend can work beautifully as the base for this salad.
  • **Creamy Avocado:** For an added layer of richness, healthy fats, and a wonderfully creamy texture, diced **avocado** is a fantastic addition that complements the other ingredients perfectly.
  • **Quick Crunch:** To save time without sacrificing flavor, use store-bought glazed pecans. They add sweetness and crunch with zero effort.
  • **Hydrating Cucumber:** If you crave an extra burst of freshness and a different kind of crunch, add thinly sliced **cucumber**.
  • **Make it a Main Course:** Transform this vibrant side salad into a hearty main dish by incorporating a protein. Leftover grilled chicken, freshly grilled shrimp, or shredded rotisserie chicken are excellent choices.
  • **Other Protein Boosts:** Crispy bacon bits add a smoky, savory dimension, while hard-boiled eggs (chopped or halved) contribute additional protein and a creamy texture.
  • **Pasta Perfection:** For a creative twist, toss in some cooked pasta! Farfalle (bow ties) are a fun shape that blends well, turning this into a delightful fruit- and vegetable-based pasta salad.

So, feel empowered to switch things up and make this strawberry spinach salad truly perfect for your unique taste preferences!

Ingredients

Units

Scale
  • 2 pints (small baskets) fresh, ripe strawberries, rinsed off, hulled, and sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced into 1” long pieces
  • 11/2 cups walnut halves
  • 1 large bag of baby spinach
  • 1 cup crumbled goat cheese (not Feta)
  • Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette

Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette

  • 1 cup fresh, ripe strawberries that have been cleaned, husked, and sliced
  • 1/3 cup white balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 Tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1 large clove garlic, peeled and minced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds

Instructions

Prepare the Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette ahead of time, so that it is ready when you need it:

    1. Place all ingredients, EXCEPT THE POPPY SEEDS, in a blender, Vitamix, or food processor.
    2. Puree everything for 15 – 30 seconds. It doesn’t take long at all.
    3. Taste to see if your preferences require more sugar, salt, and/or pepper. My family prefers a less tart vinaigrette, so we add sugar until it’s just right for us.
    4. Mix in the poppy seeds.
    5. Chill until ready to serve.

For the Salad:

  1. either a large flat serving bowl or arranged on individual salad plates, place all of the spinach leaves (or divide equally among salad plates).
  2. Place strawberries on top of spinach.
  3. Place red onion slices all over the top of the strawberries.
  4. Sprinkle the walnut halves all over.
  5. Generously sprinkle the crumbled goat cheese over the entire salad.
  6. Pass the dressing around to guests to ladle on individually.
  7. Enjoy!
  8. Buon Appetito!
