For many, including us, few things are as universally impressive, both indoors and out, as fresh flowers. They represent a visual weak spot, captivating attention and inspiring countless photographs wherever we travel. Did you know that true blue is among the rarest colors in the floral kingdom? It’s a fascinating botanical fact! Consequently, encountering vibrant, living blue delphiniums, hydrangeas, irises, or even the delicate Texas bluebells in bloom is an experience that genuinely takes our breath away. These natural wonders, whether in a grand hotel or a humble garden, possess an unparalleled ability to elevate a space and touch the soul.
At The Balmoral, the interior floral arrangements were artfully complimented by lush green foliage and bright white architectural details, creating a truly special and inviting space to enter. The strategic use of color and texture transformed the reception area into a sophisticated sanctuary, hinting at the beauty that awaited further inside.

Upon entering The Palm Court itself, guests are met with an extraordinary sense of awe. The huge, lofty two-story open dining area is breathtaking, with décor perfectly scaled to fill the grand space in a delightful and harmonious way. A tall, towering artificial cherry tree, resplendent with pink, peach, and white blossoms, serves as a magnificent central focal point. Its branches guide the eye upwards, drawing attention towards a spectacular glass atrium ceiling. One can only imagine the glamour and elegance of dining in such luminous tea rooms with brightly glassed ceilings and walls, a trend that became all the rage in England starting with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This design element evokes a timeless sense of luxury and connection to the outside world, even when indoors.
Beyond the cherry tree, did you notice the subtle yet elegant sage green and beige-grey wall covering? And, true to its name, the presence of majestic palm trees further enhances the exotic, serene atmosphere. The upholstery for the plush, cushy leather chairs is a rich avocado green, providing a comforting touch of nature. A surprising pop of teal blue beneath the cherry tree adds a vibrant accent, beautifully complementing the various shades of green throughout the room, creating a sophisticated and inviting color palette that soothes and delights.

The strategically placed, huge mirrors throughout the Palm Court are not just decorative; they ingeniously reflect the abundant natural light from above, and repeatedly echo the exquisite images of fresh flowers and lush greenery, creating an illusion of infinite botanical beauty. This thoughtful design element amplifies the sense of space and brings the garden ambiance further into the dining area.

The delicate, soft texture of the cherry tree petals provides a beautiful yin and yang effect, contrasting harmoniously with the hard, solid texture of the heavy architectural trim and ornate detailing found throughout the room. This interplay of soft and robust textures adds depth and visual interest to the opulent environment.

As you gaze upwards, your eyes are drawn to the source of a melodic, live harp performance. The gentle, ethereal sounds float gracefully through the vast space, adding an extra layer of serenity and sophistication to the entire dining experience. This live musical accompaniment is a testament to the Balmoral’s commitment to providing an all-encompassing sensory journey.

The natural theme of The Palm Court is elegantly carried to each table through the appropriately selected bone china, adorned with delicate green palm fronds. This bespoke tableware harmonizes perfectly with the room’s décor, setting a refined stage for the culinary delights to come.
The exquisite green and white color scheme of the china ensures that no other element competes for visual attention, allowing the intricate designs and vibrant hues of the tableware to truly pop against the pristine white tablecloths. It’s a testament to thoughtful design where every detail enhances the overall aesthetic.

The Afternoon Tea experience at The Palm Court unfolds as a meticulously crafted pre-fixed menu, featuring a generous five courses. This culinary journey included a refreshing cold fruit-vegetable beverage, an array of delectable savories, classic tea sandwiches, warm, fluffy scones, and an exquisite selection of pastries. Each course was not only extremely filling but also incredibly impressive, particularly the sweet options, which showcased intricate details and were painstakingly decorated by hand. It’s a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

From the options presented on the menu (visible above), we carefully selected one classic tea experience and one tea accompanied by champagne, adding a celebratory sparkle to the occasion. While the price certainly reflects the exceptional quality, impeccable service, and the luxurious ambiance of the entire experience, it is profoundly worth the initial sticker shock for those seeking to celebrate a special occasion or simply indulge in a moment of pure bliss. This isn’t an everyday occurrence; for many, it’s a rare treat, perhaps even a once-in-a-lifetime experience that creates cherished memories. The value truly lies in the holistic, unforgettable indulgence.

To further enhance the experience, we were treated to a delightful demonstration as our server prepared tea for us. We invite you to enjoy the brief video below showcasing this graceful ritual – another unexpected and charming element of The Palm Court’s Afternoon Tea that we did not encounter in the other two tea restaurants we visited in Edinburgh. Every aspect of the service and presentation was simply exceptional, elevating the entire occasion into a truly special event.
The tea, a beautiful rosy-red hue, was the result of my choice of a rose-flavored tea, which proved to be simply superb and wonderfully aromatic, adding a delicate floral note to the experience.

We began our delightful experience by savoring a crisp, refreshing glass of champagne, setting a luxurious tone. Following this elegant start, we were served a surprise palate cleanser…

…a delightfully yummy, chilled glass of watermelon-tomato gazpacho juice. This unique and refreshing starter perfectly cleansed the palate, preparing us for the courses to follow.
The next brief video offers a comprehensive view of the entire 3-tier server, beautifully laden with an array of exquisite finger foods destined to be enjoyed over the subsequent three courses. It’s a visual feast that promises a culinary journey!
Here, in close-up, are the absolutely crazy-good tea sandwiches. The generous portions were striking – it felt like we were served the equivalent of two full sandwiches, each bursting with amazing, gourmet fillings. It was far more substantial and creatively composed than what my husband and I typically expect from tea sandwiches!

On the middle tier, we discovered the “savouries” – a delightful collection of non-sandwich finger foods. This included delicate mini-tarts, artfully topped blinis, gourmet crisps, and slices of crusty artisan bread, each adorned with a savory topping designed to tantalize the taste buds.

The bottom tier, the foundation of this delightful spread, is traditionally reserved for the quintessential elements of any British tea: freshly baked scones, accompanied by rich, velvety clotted cream, and an exquisite jam. On this particular occasion, we were treated to a truly exceptional house-made Balmoral strawberry jam. My husband was absolutely smitten with it, praising its vibrant flavor and perfect consistency. We’ve since attempted to source this specific jam online, hoping to have some shipped to us in the States, but so far, our quest to find this culinary treasure has been unsuccessful. It truly highlights the unique quality of the Balmoral’s offerings.

Such was the allure of this amazing Balmoral jam that we were meticulous in ensuring not a single drop was lost as we generously spread it onto our warm, fluffy scones. Every morsel was precious!

The fifth and final course, a grand finale to our culinary journey, consisted of an array of exquisite pastries. Once again, each delicate confection was lovingly handmade and meticulously embellished, showcasing incredible artistry and attention to detail. After indulging in such a generous amount of food across the previous four courses, we could barely manage more than a bite or two of these sweet masterpieces. However, thoughtfully, the staff provided convenient to-go boxes, allowing us to savor these delightful treats later as a perfect late-evening snack in the comfort of our hotel room – a truly welcome gesture!

Our extraordinary Afternoon Tea at the Palm Court did not simply conclude with the final pastry. To our immense surprise and delight, as a thoughtful parting gift, we received two elegantly covered tins of loose-leaf tea to take home with us. These many thoughtful extras and refined touches truly exemplify the unparalleled hospitality embedded in The Palm Court’s Afternoon Tea experience. What a truly fine and memorable way to culminate a perfect tea experience in the heart of Edinburgh!

As we departed The Balmoral, stepping out to hail a cab, I couldn’t resist taking one final photograph of the truly gorgeous flower arrangements adorning the entrance. It’s moments like these that make me reflect on how deeply I miss my own gardens whenever I travel, appreciating the vibrant beauty of nature wherever I find it.

Leaving through the majestic front door, we were once again enveloped by an abundance of exquisite flowers gracing the entryway. It was August, and the flowers in Scotland were in magnificent full bloom, showing no signs of wilting or suffering from the heat, a stark contrast to my South Carolina gardens this time of year. The Scottish climate truly felt like a perpetual May, with pleasant temperatures ranging between 60 – 70 F degrees during the day, a welcome reprieve from the 85 – 95 F degrees we typically experience back home. This delightful difference further enhanced the charm of our visit.

While a typical Scottish day might often be characterized by grey skies, clouds, and a touch of rain, it’s all part of the charming daily routine, particularly for the steadfast doorman and the traditional Scottish bagpiper. Their presence, alongside the impressive red carpet rolled out for guests, adds to the quintessential Edinburgh experience, making even a slightly damp day feel uniquely special and authentic.

Finally, to truly capture the essence of Scotland’s vibrant culture and hospitality, we wholeheartedly encourage you to take a moment and listen to the captivating sounds of this talented ‘piper’ in the video below! It’s an auditory delight that perfectly rounds off the enchanting Balmoral experience.
